As experienced instructors, you know that feedback from your students is a very important aspect of designing effective student learning experiences. We have listed a number of leading questions below that we hope will guide the assessment of and your reflections on your new curricular piece. As we have discussed, all of your projects are small teaching and learning experiments, and like all experiments it’s important to know how well they worked, what we can learn and what we can tweak or reconsider to make improvements or build upon in future semesters. These questions will help focus your attention on your desired outcomes and the process by which you’ve accomplished them. These questions should also form the basis of your final presentation and write up of the implementation and assessment aspect of your innovation. We are all facing similar issues, so hopefully starting from the same set of questions will make everyone’s experience relevant and valuable to everyone else. Leading Questions: Describe your assessment approach. Blackboard assessment surveys: selected response and narrative, as well as my own assessment of the quality of student work elicited by use of technology—in this case, the public nature of a written contribution on some aspect of feminist thought to wikipedia. What factors (environmental, logistical, etc.) contributed to you choosing that approach? Ease of use; attempt to elicit anonymous responses; desire to incorporation both selected response and narrative data. My assessment of value of the experiment was guided as much by the quality of students’ work as by the Blackboard survey. What conclusions about your intervention have you drawn from your assessment? I intend to continue with the assignment, since many students seemed to feel that the assignment offered them not only knowledge about the wikipedia itself, but also inspired a higher degree of engagement and critical reflection about feminist theory in relationship to their own work. How does the feedback you’ve received differ from your observations and/or expectations of your innovation’s impact and success? I became more convinced in the course of the project that it could foster student engagement within a feminist classroom. Did you encounter any problems implementing your intervention, if so, how did you resolve them? Student unfamiliarity with wikipedia in particular and technology in general, problems with passwords and access, problems with editing/elimination of student contributions by those outside the class. Most frequent complaint was concern about producing work of high enough quality for international dissemination through the web. Describe changes or improvements you may make as a result of the assessment process. Incorporate more support for students’ experimenting with the process for the first time, especially working with partners to reduce technology anxiety, increase quality of the final product, and enhance understanding of collaborative generation of feminist theory. Abstract Please provide us with an abstract of your project, as well as any online material or other material you think might be relevant for understanding you project. We’ll be creating a webpage on the pICT website, where your name, department and project will be listed and any materials you share with us will be linked.
